Activities

Here are a few of the many activities we've been involved with. There are too many to make a complete list, but these are some of the ones we spent the most time on.

Renaissance School

Rennaissance School

We worked with a 6th grade class at the Boston Renaissance Charter School in Hyde Park. We did 1-hour activities with them once a week throughout the spring semester.

We used hands-on activities to reinforce the topics they were learning about in science class at the time, including body systems, optics, and ecosystems.

STOMP

STOMP

We created an engineering curriculum at Cottage Street School in Sharon, MA. Students learned about basic physics concepts, including electricity & magnetism.

Students also learned about the engineering design process through making waterwheels, storybook engineering, and making cars.

GTEC

GTEC

The GTEC pilot at Olin is a collaboration between Olin Engineering Discovery, Newburyport High School students, and Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC).

High school students learn the fundamentals of the problem-oriented design process and apply this knowledge to design, model, prototype, and analyze a solution to the problem they identify.

This year, students chose to create a device to harvest energy that would otherwise be wasted. Solutions included a kinetic sculpture and an addition to swivel chairs to harvest energy generated from spinning.

Third Grade Math

math

We worked with 3rd graders from Mitchell Elementary School in Needham.

Once a week, we did math puzzles with a group of advanced students from each of the 3rd grade classes.

Discovering Green - Green Club

Green Club

Discovering Green with Olin College is an afterschool program for 3rd-5th grade students focusing on sustainable technology and design.

In this 10 week program we covered topics such as wind turbines, water wheels, passive solar heat, water purification, and solar ovens.
